Adoption Competent Therapy
As an adoptee myself and a therapist, I have not only felt the, sometimes, indescribable and conflicting emotions that come along with being adopted, but I have heard it explained to me as well. That feeling of a puzzle piece of your life is missing. The struggle of looking in the mirror and not seeing any similarities to anyone you know. The feeling of knowing that something was "off" your entire life. There are so many more complex feelings that can pop up over the course of your life.
Adoption-competent therapy is a specialized approach that recognizes the unique experiences, emotions, and challenges connected to adoption for everyone involved—the adoptee, birth parents, and adoptive parents. It goes beyond traditional therapy by understanding the lifelong impact of adoption, including identity development, attachment, loss, and belonging. Adoption-competent therapists are trained to provide informed, sensitive, and supportive care that honors each person’s story and helps individuals and families navigate their relationships, emotions, and personal growth with compassion and understanding.
